News from a correspondent, Mark Smith at the Aral Sea

Respect the flora, fauna and the marine environment
• Respect the flora, fauna and the marine environment.
Marine eco-systems are fragile and they suffer the
consequences of human activity.
• Take every possible precaution when anchoring your
boat. You can destroy valuable eco-systems with it, such
as meadows of Posidonia Oceanica, an endangered
species of sea grass.
• Throwing any kind of oily waste into the sea is
prohibited (oils, oily waters and other hydrocarbons).
• Throwing plastics, glass, packing and packaging of any
kind into the sea is prohibited. Remember, the sea is
not a rubbish dump.
• Waste waters from toilets, kitchens and wash basins
may not be discharged into the sea within 4 miles
of the coast. Ministry of Public Works Order
FOM/1144/2003, regulates waste water spills from
leisure craft washing facilities and toilets. From the
12th of May 2004, all leisure craft fitted with toilets
and washing facilities that were registered before
the 12th of August 2003, must comply with the
provisions on spills and they must have on-board
waste water storage systems for holding said waters
until they are discharged in port.
• Waste waters can be discharged between 4 and 12
miles from the coast, if the vessel is fitted with the
suitable equipment for shredding and disinfecting the
remains. Discharge is not permitted within 12 miles of
the coast in the Mediterranean in any event, unless it is
organic waste. In any event, the boat must be sailing at
over 4 knots during the discharge and it must not
produce any floating solids or any discolouring of the
water
• Food remains (organic waste) may not be thrown
overboard within 12 miles of the coast, and may never
be thrown overboard in plastic bags.
• As a rule, keep all your waste aboard in suitable tanks
and containers, and empty them in the port facilities
when you reach land.Take hydrocarbon waste (fuel and
oil) to the nearest MARPOL facility. For other kinds of
waste, use the devoted containers (food waste, packing
and packaging, glass, paper and cardboard) in your
home port or Yacht Club.
• If you generate other kinds of hazardous waste, such as
the remains of paint, solvents, used batteries, etc., take
all suitable precautions and take them to a suitable site
on shore (Clean Point).
